What makes the oceans so salty?

Why the water is salty is perhaps one of the most fascinating phenomena of interest to the youngest on the beach. This is an ongoing issue that has generated much controversy, but is still taken for granted. When you go swimming at the beach, you expect to smell the salty taste of the sea, but freshwater bodies like rivers, lakes and streams are just the opposite.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the water is salty due to runoff rock located on land. When carbon dioxide in runoff mixes with oxygen from the air, it becomes acidic and dissolves rocks. The ions are formed and transported by runoff, and eventually end up in the ocean where they eventually concentrate and make the water salty (NOAA, 2008). This process is expected to continue for billions of years (NOAA, 2008). Over time, the water becomes saltier as runoff increases (Matthews, n.d.).

Changes in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, as well as global warming, are thought to have contributed to increased runoff production, leading to higher ocean salinity (Rae, et al, 2018). Tests were conducted to determine the amount of ions in the water and the carbon dioxide content. Increased carbon storage and changes in general climate circulation are associated with ice ages.

It seems that as our climate changes and global warming plays an increasing role in our lives, these changes will have a major impact on the ocean. The fact that the ocean is salty, and the evolving global processes that contribute to it, should not be taken for granted.
