District reports closure of 8 classrooms as of November

ATASCADERO – The administrators of the Atascadero Unified School District were informed by the district about COVID-19, the future budget and a handful of construction projects approaching completion at the last meeting in 2020.

At an organizational meeting prior to the discussion of the agenda, the Board of Directors acknowledged outgoing President Donn Klickard and elected George Shoemaker as President for 2021.

AUSD Superintendent Tom Butler used his report to update the community and Board of Directors of the VIDOC-19 protocols after several classes were briefly closed in the last two months.

For the sake of transparency, I would like to point out that we have been working on this since the second quarter. November to convert eight classrooms in the district from full-time to part-time, Butler told counsel. Four of them have appeared before and are now present in person again. Today we still have four people enrolled in a distance learning course. One of them will resume a face-to-face course before the winter break and the other three will continue a distance learning course.

The district currently has three certified contact nurses and they continue to work with the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department to identify all students and staff who may be at risk and quarantine them to ensure the safety of others.

By working closely with public health and our medical staff, we can already report that there is no evidence of transmission in the schools in the cases I mentioned, Butler said. These were a small number of community cases that resulted in contact with a family member, perhaps a teacher or student, but this was not reported on our pages due to health information.

Following the reports of the Board of Directors, Assistant Superintendent Jackie Martin gave an update of the first interim budget report as of day 31. October. The budget report shows the capacity of the district to meet its financial obligations up to 2020-21 and in the next two financial years, based on the actual level of public funding. This is the third year, in 2022-23, that the district faces some challenges, but this may change in the future.

Facilities Manager Brandt Ice gave a brief presentation to the directors at the end of the last meeting of the year on the improvements being made in the district.

Lloyd started the San Benito Primary School, which was upgraded in October 2019 and is expected to be completed in December. The San Benito site was brought into compliance with the American disability code by installing ADA-approved sinks, sidewalks, toilets and parking spaces, as well as a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

At the Atascadero High School the following three improvements have been made. The new Black Box Theatre, whose work began in September 2018, was completed in two phases, the first being a music hall and the second a complete theatre with an adjoining auditorium. The 2,250 square metre theatre will also have two cash registers and risers and is expected to be completed in December.

In addition, the AHS has several new classrooms in what used to be called the C-Wing of Science Department. This project included some of the oldest buildings on campus and included the demotion of many classrooms into stalls.

The final product will consist of a new gymnasium, an athletic ticketing facility, renovated sanitary facilities and much more. The project started in June 2019 and is expected to be completed in March 2021.

Lloyd also talked about the demolition of Building B, which has been in the news for over ten years. This will happen in the summer of 2021. The plans for the building have not yet been completed, but one of the ideas was to create a green space for students.

The director of the complex concluded his presentation with a brief update on the AHS pool, indicating that the design phase is nearing completion and should be submitted to the Board of Directors at the beginning of January.
