Penguin, the Batman villain, turns 80 this year. Danny DeVito is writing a comic book to celebrate the occasion.

The when was batman created is a question that has been asked many times. Danny DeVito, who is writing the Penguin comic book, will answer the question in the Batman villain’s 80th anniversary.

In Tim Burton’s superhero sequel Batman Returns, Danny DeVito reprises his famous role as the Penguin. While he won’t be wearing the top hat and monocle himself, the actor has been tapped to create an all-new Penguin-centric comic book focused on the monocled supervillain. The tale will be published in DC’s Gotham City Villains Anniversary Giant No. 1 on November 30.

Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot, a psychopath reared by actual penguins who seeks vengeance for his abandonment as a kid, against Michael Keaton’s Batman in the original 1992 film Batman Returns. Though it was difficult to follow in the footsteps of Jack Nicholson’s Joker, DeVito shone in this role, and his depiction of the Penguin has become one of the all-time great supervillain representations. It’s also DeVito’s most well-known part.

The inclusion of Penguin in this new comic book is also a means to commemorate the character’s 80th birthday. Bill Finger and Bob Kane developed the well-known supervillain for the first time in 1941’s Detective Comics No. 58. He has subsequently established himself as one of Batman’s most persistent adversaries, and he continues to feature in DC-related projects across many media. In recent years, he was portrayed by Robin Lord Taylor in the prequel series Gotham, and in next year’s The Batman, Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Penguin.

Meanwhile, in a separate Batman ’89 comic book series, which just released its first issue, the mythos of Tim Burton’s Batman films will be developed further. The comic book continues where Batman Returns ended, making it a genuine sequel to the films. Early concept art also shows us the Billy Dee Williams version of Two-Face that we never saw in the movies; Williams portrayed Dent in Tim Burton’s Batman, but the character was replaced with Tommy Lee Jones in Batman Forever.

Danny DeVito Penguin Comic #2

Screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman Returns) wrote the script for Batman ’89, which was drawn by Joe Quinones (Dial H for Hero). According to the official synopsis: “Many of DC’s worldwide fans’ initial views of the Dark Knight’s Gotham were influenced by the world’s gothic mindset, which was nevertheless grounded in reality. Hamm and Quinones will help usher in the return of Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the new Batman ’89 comic, as well as introduce a new Robin! In addition, Quinones’ vision for Harvey Dent/Two-Face is as near to cinematic magic as a comic can go!”
