The top-seeded Oklahoma Sooners shut out UCLA in the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series, 4-0, on Friday night, beating the Bruins for the second time in the past three years. The Sooners will meet Stanford in the final of the tournament on Saturday.
UCLA, the defending softball national champion, was eliminated from the Women’s College World Series on Thursday, following a 5-0 loss to Oklahoma. That will leave the Bruins as the only school left in the tournament without a national title, the first team to do so since 2006. As for the Sooners, they will now move on to face the winner of the game between Alabama and Mississippi State in the Women’s College World Series Championship Game.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Defending champion softball UCLA was eliminated late Saturday night in the College Women’s World Series by a 10-3 defeat against Oklahoma. This was the game many were waiting for in the championship game: The Susers’ first place finish against the Bruins’ second place finish. But after Oklahoma’s loss to star James Madison and UCLA’s loss to Alabama, both teams found themselves in a win-or-go home group. After a nearly 2 1/2-hour delay, UCLA got help from Rachel Garcia, who pitched in her third consecutive game. After helping the Bruins take a 3-0 lead with a three-run home run, she started making errors in the circle and the Suners won. They immediately stood up, fought back and beat us on the field today, UCLA coach Kelly Inoue-Perez said. It was not expected that we would end up in a losing group here, but things happen. Garcia, a two-time Player of the Year and Olympian, initially ran into trouble in the third inning when Suners answered her homerun with two more.

But the coach did not fail to congratulate Garcia for always putting the team on his shoulders. We couldn’t do it, Inouye-Perez said. I’m proud of this team and proud of Rachel Garcia. She decided to go back and do what she could to help the program. She was put in a position where she had to do all this, but no one blames her. She gave everything, and I told her it wasn’t about proving anything. You make your mark on the game. You passed, you have a future. And for all of us, it’s just sad that she’s leaving the Bruins’ bubble, and I’m very proud of that. I’ll take Rachel Garcia any day of the week. Garcia pitched 5⅓ innings and gave up eight runs, six of them earned, in her final career game for UCLA. Inouye-Perez hugged her as Garcia left the field for the final time on the Bruins team and held back her tears. Just by spending this moment with a coach, I will be grateful; she gave me the opportunity to graduate from a top university, and here I am, in my final moment as a Bruin. I’m honored, Garcia said. Garcia and teammate Bubba Nickles will now be part of the Olympic team heading to Tokyo. Nickels, who recently returned to the lineup after a wrist injury, struggled again and lost 3-0. Oklahoma’s Gisele Juarez, who replaced Nicole May in the third inning, delivered an impressive performance and kept the Bruins from scoring. After scoring just three points in their season opener loss to James Madison, the Soosers scored 18 points in wins over Georgia and UCLA on Saturday.
