The Trump administration has generated many and varied controversies. One thing the administration has done that seems to have wide support is to revive the U.S. presence in space.

One particular space project, however, may not be so special. This is a new official branch of the U.S. military, the Space Force. Many satirical comments have been made about it. Only in some cases and not in others. Some seem to think that a new administration in the White House would mean the quick end of the new military industry. That seems rather unlikely. Even since its official inception.

Has bipartisan support in Congress.

Abolishing the established separation of the U.S. military requires Congress. Either way, it would be a daunting task. But all the more so because many current members of Congress have just accepted this separation in 2019.

Some observers confuse the Space Force with Donald Trump’s other, more confusing projects. But Republicans and Democrats agree that space is a defense issue. And that an industry specifically dedicated to it is the best way forward.

Even if it did not have bipartisan support in Congress, there is the question of feasibility. The cosmic force exists. It is active and functioning. Trying to restore it may be much more difficult than adjusting to its existence.

Whatever its plans for the Space Force, the new administration has said nothing yet. One official who seems to be a big supporter of it is John E. Hyten, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces. Hyten is a four-star general in the U.S. Air Force.

One can understand to some extent why cosmic power has been the object of such satire.

Some of the Trump administration’s other policies may, of course, generate skepticism. And Power’s imagery and vocabulary tend toward possible pop culture scams. Take, for example, the unmistakable resemblance between the Space Force seal and the fictional Starfleet emblem.

But this could be due in large part to a simple misunderstanding of the Space Force’s current mission.

As the HA notes, many people have a misconception about what it does. It conjures up images of intergalactic battles between spaceships. Maybe one day it will be on the streets. But that’s not the case today. Instead, it is primarily devoted to satellite and missile activities.

Space power is also now the primary service supporting U.S. space command. A unified combat command that spans multiple branches. As The Hill notes, there is also controversy surrounding Space Command and its planned move from Colorado to Alabama.

The space force is separate from the air force.

The new branch is essentially what the Air Force Space Command was. Although it is a separate branch, the space forces are still part of the Air Force Department.

Just as the Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy.

In fact, its origins are reminiscent of the way the Air Force itself was created. They were part of the U.S. Army before it seceded. At the time, it was known as the U.S. Army Air Forces. After the U.S. Army Air Corps and the U.S. Army Air Service.
