After a 14-match unbeaten run in Scotland’s top flight, Rangers’ run of dominance in the Scottish Premiership came to an end on Saturday as their first league defeat in 41 matches was inflicted on them, writes Neil Morris. As the visitors’ task appeared to be made much more difficult by the withdrawal of £3 million signing Andy Halliday and a late injury to Gary Mackay-Steven, manager Mark Warburton regarded the result as a “massive disappointment”.

Dundee United 1-0 Rangers: Robson consigns visitors to first league defeat in 41 games On a bitterly cold night in mid-November, the visitors from Glasgow’s Govan area approached the ground wearing woolly hats and jackets. This was a last minute change from their usual ensemble of polo shirts and jeans. It didn’t take long for the home side to get to the business end of proceedings, and the visitors’ confidence faded. The visitors’ early effort came in the shape of a long range shot from Millar, who had come on as a late substitute for Miller. The goal was somewhat fortuitous, as neither Robson nor the Dundee United defenders had closed the angle down. Robson’s goal

A last day of winter wonderland in Scotland saw the Rangers visit Dundee United, who were looking for a win to keep the pressure on their arch rivals Dundee, who were top of the table. A crowd of 9,084 saw the visitors take the lead when Michael Higdon scored after a mistake from United goalkeeper, Trevor Carson.

With a fierce display at a pulsating Tannadice, Dundee United handed Rangers their first loss in 41 Scottish Premiership meetings.

Steven Gerrard’s team suffered their first league defeat since losing to Hamilton Academical in March 2020, as Jamie Robson’s goal shortly after the hour earned Thomas Courts his first league victory as United boss.

Courts’ sixth win in six competitive games required United to defend tenaciously – and at times desperately – in the closing minutes.

Rangers, meanwhile, are without a goal for the second time in 40 games heading into Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier against Malmo at Ibrox.

With Alfredo Morelos returning in the starting XI, Steven Gerrard’s team failed to create clear opportunities as they prepare for a European match in which they must score after losing 2-1 in Sweden last week.

After Morelos missed two first-half chances, James Tavernier put United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist to the test.

Courts’ squad had begun with four League Cup victories before suffering a humiliating 2-0 loss to Aberdeen last Saturday, and they reacted with a frantic start.

The hosts, who were cheered on by almost 5000 supporters, put together some fine approach play without really challenging McLaughlin, who was chosen in goal over Allan McGregor for the second league game in a row.

Lawrence Shankland’s absence from the home attack was attributed to a hip ailment, despite Beerschot’s interest in the striker, and the lack of a focal point was one of United’s few disappointments in the first half.

Morelos, who was making his first start of the season, dragged a shot wide from a Joe Aribo cut-back before heading past Ryan Kent’s cross.

As halftime approached, Charlie Mulgrew’s header put McLaughlin to the test, and the defender was booked for a cynical pull on Morelos’ shirt. Tavernier converted the next free-kick.

After the half, the visitors improved, earning a succession of corners, culminating in Tavernier’s 25-yard effort, which Siegrist palmed away.

But, just as Rangers seemed to be making ground, Logan Chalmers’ substitute Sporle surged forward, and Robson grabbed the ball from Steven Davis’ tackle to push the ball beyond McLaughlin.

Due to reports of interest from Lincoln City and Sunderland, it may be one of the left-last back’s actions as a United player.

In quest of balance, Steven Gerrard introduced Cedric Itten and then Jermain Defoe, but Rangers’ precision and poise evaded them in the final minutes.

Jamie Robson was named man of the match.

What did we discover?

Courts found himself up against a Rangers side that was not doing well, and he nailed his tactics in an attempt to unsettle Gerrard’s players. The only complaint that can be leveled at their performance is that they did not generate additional opportunities.

In the first half, the Rangers seemed stuck in second gear and shell-shocked after falling behind.

It was a similar scenario at Tannadice when they dropped two careless goals to Malmo in midweek, and they never looked like catching up. If they want to overcome their disadvantage against the Swedes, they must improve.

What did they have to say?

Dundee United is a Scottish football club based in Dundee, Scotland. boss Courts hauls ‘monumental performance & colossal result’

“It was a tremendous performance, a huge result,” Dundee United manager Thomas Courts said. This is a critical three-point list for us. It allows us to make a little breakthrough.

“Jamie Robson was absolutely everywhere, and it was really appropriate to see him come up in that moment and have the poise to slot away.”

“Over the course of the 90 minutes, I’m not convinced we deserved to lose the game,” Rangers manager Steven Gerrard told Sky Sports. “But you always put yourself in that situation if you don’t go and score goals.”

“It wasn’t enough to produce what we did today. We don’t have time to be down on ourselves. We have a big game coming up in three days.”

What comes next?

Rangers host Malmo in the second leg of their Champions League third qualifying round encounter on Tuesday at Ibrox (20:00).

The next match for Dundee United is a League Cup game away to Ayr United on Saturday (15:00), with Rangers hosting Dunfermline the night before (19:30).
