Five-star guard Hunter Sallis, one of the top basketball players in the 2021 class, announced Friday morning his intention to play at Gonzaga.
The Zags were the big favorites in Sallis’ recruiting class, but his eight finalists also included Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Oregon, UCLA, Creighton and Iowa State.
I chose Gonzaga because they are a fast, attacking team that moves the ball, and that style suits me well, Sallis told ESPN. I have a great relationship with head coach Mark Few, assistant coach Tommy Lloyd and the rest of the team. Coach Few is a laid back guy off the field, but fiery on it. He never lets his players get too comfortable.

The 6-foot-4 point guard from Millard North High School (Nebraska) is ranked 13th on the ESPN 100 and has been selected to participate in the McDonald’s All American Game. He is the third point guard in the class and was one of the first five players available.
Sallis has excellent size on the outer edge, with long limbs and a wingspan of 6-10. He is a first class finisher who can work his way to the ring and produce. His jersey is another acceptable option for scoring. He’s a threat as a driver, and his vision low on penetration is seen to move the ball or make a decisive pass. He plays from a triple threat position with excellent footwork and effective dribbling.

He is capable of shooting 3-pointers, but he needs to become a better shooter. On defense, he plays with awareness and commitment, which allows him to get distractions and interceptions.
Gonzaga has had a lot of success over the years and the goaltending has taken the club to the next level, Sallis said. That’s my goal, and I believe Coach Few can help me achieve it. In January 2020 I was there for an official visit and I loved it. Spokane reminds me a lot of Omaha. Not much, except basketball and school. I like it that way.
Gonzaga, looking to become the first undefeated team since Indiana in 1976, is already rebuilding for next season. The Zags will lose Jalen Suggs and Corey Kispert to the lottery, while Joel Ayahy is also in the top 60 of ESPN’s NBA Draft rankings. Andrew Nembhard and Drew Timme may also be thinking about their NBA picks.
ESPN 100 forward Kaden Perry is out, while Ben Gregg, also a member of the ESPN 100, signed early and has played very little in 15 games this season. Gonzaga is also ranked as the No. 1 favorite by Chet Holmgren, and Zags transfers Walker Kessler (North Carolina) and Earl Timberlake (Miami) are expected to participate.
