The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly interested in a trade offer for quarterback Garrett Stidham, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Stidham is currently a rookie quarterback with the New England Patriots, but he was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft. Former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was a first-round draft pick for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, the Dallas Cowboys have discussed a trade of quarterback Dak Prescott for LSU quarterback prospect Jarrett Stidham, in the wake of the Darren McFadden trade. The Cowboys rank last in the NFL in both yards per game and points per game, and Prescott has struggled in the red zone, completing only 64 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and three interceptions in the red zone.

Jarrett Stidham will have to be replaced by the New England Patriots. Since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he has underachieved.
He should be coming into his own as a starting quarterback at the age of 24, not fighting Brian Hoyer, rookie first-round selection Mac Jones, and Cam Newton for the starting position, much alone a roster place, in New England.
Stidham will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which isn’t a permanent designation, but it may be the first step toward a definitive decision on his Patriots future.
The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan speculated about a possible trade between the Patriots and the Dallas Cowboys that would offer Stidham a new start while also giving New England a young wide receiver.
Stidham to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for WR Cedrick Wilson
The Patriots are unlikely to retain four quarterbacks on the roster in 2021, and most observers believe Stidham is the most likely to be moved or dismissed.
Newton will be on the roster and will most likely start unless anything goes wrong. Jones isn’t going anywhere, ever, and Hoyer has the least degree of job security, but it’s still a bit more than Stidham since he was brought in to teach the rookie.
Stidham’s possible transfer to the New York Jets is mentioned by Callahan, but he dismisses it since Bill Belichick would not want to send a quarterback to a division opponent.

As a result, Stidham is headed to Dallas, where he will leave the door open for fourth-year wideout Cedrick Wilson as he departs. As the Cowboys’ No. 4 receiver, Wilson had 20 carries for 177 yards and two scores last season. He was drafted in the sixth round out of Boise State in 2018, however he missed his rookie season due to a ruptured labrum. He spent the 2019 season on Dallas’ active roster and practice squad. Wilson burst into the scene last season with a 107-yard, two-touchdown effort in Week 3 against Seattle, just before Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott fractured his ankle and took the Cowboys’ passing offense with him. Wilson has also returned kickoffs and punts. With just Cooper Rush, Ben DiNucci, and Garrett Gilbert on the roster, Dallas still needs a backup quarterback. The Cowboys might be enticed by Stidham’s tools on their own, or they could put their faith in Josh McDaniels’ coaching. After returning on a one-year, restricted free agent tender in April, Stidham’s deal is also less expensive and lasts twice as long as Wilson’s. Wilson becomes the epitome of disposable if Noah Brown or fifth-round rookie receiver Semi Fehoko can catch up to him on Dallas’ depth chart this summer. Both sides are negotiating from a position of strength in this situation.
Wilson’s flexibility should appeal to the Patriots, and any cheap returns they get in exchange for Stidham should be considered a positive.
Dak Prescott’s backup, Stidham, may be a valuable asset.
In Dallas, Dak Prescott is the undisputed starter, but as we saw last season, a club can start their second-string quarterback for the remainder of the season with just one play.
Despite the fact that Prescott is much more established as the Cowboys’ starter than Newton or Jones would be in New England, Stidham may be higher on the depth chart in Dallas. Stidham would also get a much-needed new start with the Cowboys.
