Sports fans might be familiar with a few of the names in the above list—most Jets fans will recognize Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson. A few other players, however, have been relatively under the radar of the sports media. Here is a top 10 list of next-gen stats that should help Jets fans understand which NFL players are poised to explode onto the scene when the 2017 NFL season kicks off.

Last month, Bill Barnwell at ESPN’s The Bill Barnwell Show and The Ringer’s Danny Kelly discussed their favorite next-generation statistics, which offer a more nuanced picture of the league’s talent. Barnwell is a fan of the NFL’s new passing game data, and uses it to rank the top 10 passers in the league. Kelly prefers the new run-based stats, which introduce a new wrinkle into the discussion. To rank the penetrating threats in the league, Kelly uses the NFL’s new run-stop percentage stat, which measures the percentage of a quarterback’s runs that either lead to a negative play or result in a sack for the defense.

The top 10 disruptors in the NFL according to Next Gen Stats are as follows: 10. Rishard Matthews, Florida – The top receiver in the class of 2011 becomes the first receiver ever to be ranked eighth in Rushing NERD. 9. J.J. Watt, Wisconsin – The 2012 Defensive Player of the Year establishes a new record for Pass Rushing NERD by displacing J.J. Watt, who ranked number eight last year. 8. Demaryius Thomas, Georgia Tech – Denver’s most dangerous receiver continues his rise up the charts, and his 13.2 Rushing NERD is the highest in the class of 2012. 7. Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State -. The New York Jets haven’t had a consistent top linebacker on the team since John Abraham. Worse, the pass rush as a whole hasn’t really been scary since Rex Ryan was head coach, and even then it’s a bit over the top. This was one of the critical areas to address in the 2021 season, and general manager Joe Douglas did not disappoint fans. Top 10 NFL passers in New York ?

Although Lawson is very talented, he has yet to become a household name. Maybe it’s because he played in Cincinnati, or maybe the former Bengal just doesn’t want the attention, but his play has been unremarkable since coming into the league in 2017. That’s about to change in the Big Apple. With the exception of an injury-plagued second season, Lawson has made five or more sacks in every season. He scored a career-high 8.5 sacks in his rookie year in 2017, but overall his game has gotten strong over the past two seasons. I mean Lawson has become a more complete player in the side, and it shows in his analysis. NFL Next Gen Stats just released its Top 10 Destroyers of 2020, and Lawson ranks seventh. The top 10 defensive disruptors in 2020! (via @NextGenStats) – NFL (@NFL) 3. June 2021 If you’re more of an old-school fan, you might be thinking: What is this destroyer and why do I care? A destroyer is basically a defender who wreaks havoc in the backfield. Next Gen determines these rankings by combining the frequency of sacks, the frequency of breakdowns, and the total number of interceptions, pressures, and QB sacks. The player commonly referred to as the big upset is Jadeveon Clowney, as he suppresses the run and keeps the quarterback off balance at most times. Clowney didn’t make that list in 2020, but Lawson did. That honor may not always show up in the stats, but is incredibly important in today’s NFL. Just look at Patrick Mahomes in last year’s Super Bowl. He was only taken down three times, but was hit eight times and pressured 29 times (Super Bowl record). We all know how that game ended. Despite only getting 5.5 sacks in 2020, Lawson threw a total of 36 interceptions and 32 quarterback hurries. Next Gen also noted that Lawson ranked seventh last year with 10.5 made sacks, another analytics winner.

Where does Lawson fit into Robert Saleh’s defense?

Lawson only turns 26 this month, so it’s assumed he still has a lot of untapped potential. According to the GM, that means you sign a player before he comes, not after. Add Robert Saleh, one of the best defensive coordinators of the last five years, and you have a recipe for success. I expect Lawson to be the starting LEO in this defense based solely on his playmaking ability. LEO is the most athletic defender in Saleh’s roster, and his assignments require both skill and intelligence. This position not only provides pressure as an impact hitter, but also stops the run and has the speed to close gaps or close the edge when needed. Lawson might get some help mastering that role, as the Jets just contracted Ronald Blair, who was a leos pitcher with the San Francisco 49ers. It’s been a long time since this franchise had a defensive line filled with stars at every position, whether it’s Quinnen Williams or John Franklin-Myers, Foley Fatukasi or Sheldon Rankins, Lawson or Vinny Curry, this unit is well stocked. The fact that Saleh is at the head of the country only underlines this. Lawson said it best when asked about the head coach at his press conference: If you have a man who is so passionate about [football], then you want to come here and work every day….. It makes you want to build a culture. Did you like or dislike the signing of Carl Lawson with Jets fans? Keep us posted on Facebook @HeavyOnJets or on Twitter @obermuller_nyj and @BoyGreen25.
