But after painful and disorienting weeks of threatening the American health care and constitutional system, Monday promised a political turning point and a glimmer of hope.

The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And now we know that nothing – not even a pandemic or abuse of power – can extinguish these flames, said Biden in Wilmington, Delaware.

After weeks of measured rhetoric, while Trump tries by all means to undo Biden’s victory, the President-elect has made his clearest statement, but it’s time to hear unfounded claims that the election has been stolen.

He was mainly scathing about the failed attempt by the Texas Republican to have the Supreme Court reject millions of legal voters in the battleground states he won.

The integrity of our elections remains intact. The time has come to turn the tide, as we have done in the course of our history. Unite, heal, Biden said.

Exercise of presidential power

Biden’s statement was a clear desire to move the country forward not only after the most violent post-election period in modern times. It was also a strong attempt to assert his power as the new president, create the symbolism of a transfer of power that Trump denies, and even establish legitimacy among Trump’s supporters.

There is no evidence that a president who consistently ignores constitutional norms is any closer to accepting the reality of his defeat.

But there were signs that the old regime fell when several of Tromp’s Republican allies in the Senate reluctantly began to realize six weeks after the elections that Biden was indeed the elected president.

A source close to Trump told CNN’s Jim Acosta that while the president has personally acknowledged that he will not stay in the White House for a second term, he will not stop trying to discredit the election.

Another assistant said it was highly unlikely that the president would appear at Biden’s inauguration at the ceremonial table symbolizing the most broken chain of peaceful transfers of executive power in the United States.

Nor is there likely to be a cathartic national moment, such as Vice President Al Gore’s gracious concession speech in December after the bitter legal battle George W. Bush won the presidency in 2000.

Trump’s behavior will certainly make it harder to get Biden back. There is still a chance that House Republicans, who remain under Trump’s thumb, will try to form a useless rearguard to challenge the election when Congress meets on the 6th. The month of January is dedicated to summarizing the results of the electoral college.

Monday’s one-day ballot of the electoral college was nothing more than a superficial ritual illustrating the political poison that American politics has yielded.

The illegal behaviour of the President has convinced many of the more than 70 million people who voted for him that the elections have been stolen, a dynamic that is expected to increase in the run-up to the 2022 by-elections. For example, in an interview with Fox News last weekend, he suggested that Biden was an illegitimate president.

There is a reign of terror that will last beyond this election, and that’s what I fear, David Axelrod, former senior advisor to President Barack Obama and CNN political analyst, said Monday.

Some Republican senators have responded to recent events by finally acknowledging that Biden will be the next president after succumbing to the avalanche of unfounded trump claims that the election was corrupt.

We have now gone through the constitutional process and voters have elected, said Senator-electing Roy Blunt of Missouri, chairman of the committee charged with planning the inauguration, to CNN’s Manu Raj. Another member of the GOP leadership team in the Senate, Senator John Thune of South Dakota, also confirmed that Biden received the 270 required electoral votes.

One of Trump’s closest allies in the Senate, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, insisted incredibly that the president still has a very, very narrow road ahead of him, showing that he recently spoke to Biden.

But other Republican senators did not have the courage to acknowledge Biden’s victory, even reluctantly, and refused to talk to reporters.

Historical performance

The past nine months have been an unstoppable and demoralizing march of illness, death and the rituals of normal life – work, family ties, friendships and permissiveness – culminating in confinement and deadly pathogens.

The euphoria that greeted the first vaccinations for primary care workers may have overshadowed the fact that it would take months for most Americans to receive the same – but it’s a rare sign of a better future. Trump’s administration deserves some credit for the rapid development of the vaccine, as do pharmaceutical companies, government scientists, independent researchers from around the world and the medical advances made over the years.

Fauci, the voice of factual reason during the pandemic – whose role will expand under Biden – celebrated the human effort that followed the new virus in January and delivered a 95% effective vaccine in December.

This is a historic, unprecedented achievement, said Mr. Fauci at the virtual event of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. But the country’s leading infectious disease specialist also acknowledged the tragic duality of the moment just before Monday’s horrific milestone was reached.

We have almost 300,000 dead. This is the worst public health disaster in 102 years – since the 1918 pandemic, according to Fauci. On MSNBC, he said he believes there will be enough vaccine to effectively stop the spread of Covid by the end of the second quarter. That would mean going back to the beach, visiting your family, working in restaurants – for those who still have a job -, going to the theatre and seeing big crowds at sporting events.

But before that, Americans face months of social ostracism, maskedness and mourning, while scientific modeling predicts tens of thousands more deaths.

And to realize Fauci’s optimism, everything must be done right in the massive logistics operation to vaccinate Americans – in factories, in supply chains and in the frontline of healthcare.
