At a press conference, Lionel Messi is overcome with emotion as he gets a standing ovation from the Barcelona fans.

As he announced his departure from Barcelona, an emotional Lionel Messi stated joining Paris St-Germain was “a possibility, but nothing is decided.”

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently a free agent at the age of 34.

During a press conference on Sunday, he remarked, “My family and I were sure we were going to remain here, at home.”

“This is the end of this chapter with this club, and now a new chapter begins,” the Argentina forward said. “Yes, it’s one of the most trying times of my life.”

“I don’t want to leave this club; it’s one of my favorites, and this is an unexpected turn of events.”

“I wanted to go last year, but this year I wanted to remain, which is why I’m so upset.”

“It felt as if my blood ran cold, and I was really upset. It had been very tough up until now, and I’m still trying to comprehend everything.”

“I’ll still feel terrible when I go home; it’ll be much worse; I’m not prepared for this.”

What did Messi have to say after that?

Replicas of the 34 trophies Lionel Messi has won with BarcelonaAfter making his first-team debut in October 2004 at the age of 17, Lionel Messi went on to win 34 championships with Barcelona.

Last summer, Messi, Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer, requested a move before deciding to remain for the last year of his contract.

Messi reportedly in negotiations to join Paris Saint-Germain, where he would play with Kylian Mbappe and former Barcelona teammate Neymar.

“It’s a possibility,” he added, “but I haven’t agreed on anything with anybody.” “I’ve had a few teams interested; nothing is set in stone yet, but we’re talking to them.”

Messi moved to Spain when he was 13 years old and made his first-team debut for Barcelona in October 2004 when he was 17 years old.

He went on to score 672 goals in 778 appearances and assist the Spanish giants in winning 34 trophies, copies of which were on display during his Nou Camp press conference.

“I’m very thankful for everyone’s affection, for all of my teammates, and for the club’s support,” he added. “I have to say goodbye to everything today.”

“I came when I was 13 years old and am going with my wife and three Catalan-Argentine children after 21 years.”

“I am very proud of all I accomplished and lived in this city, and I have no doubt that we will return after a few years away since it is our home.”

“I’m leaving the club without seeing the fans for almost a year and a half [because to the epidemic], and if I imagined it, I’d picture the Camp Nou packed and a befitting farewell, but it has to be this way,” Messi said.

What is the reason behind Messi’s departure from Barcelona?

Messi seemed to be poised to prolong his stay at the Nou Camp after signing a new five-year deal in July, reducing his previous contract’s £123 million per season.

However, the deal was contingent on player departures to bring Barca’s salary bill under La Liga’s cap, which the club was unable to do.

“I promised to cut my pay in half, and they didn’t ask for anything else,” Messi said. “It’s not true that they demanded anything else from me.”

“I just know it wasn’t feasible due of La Liga and the club’s desire to avoid more debt.”

On Friday, Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated that keeping Messi would have placed the club’s future in jeopardy for the next 50 years.

Messi’s agents approached PSG when it became apparent that Barca would not honor the deal they had agreed upon with Messi, but wherever Messi goes next, he has said that he wants to “spend my final years fighting for championships.”

He also issued a warning to Dani Alves, a former Barcelona teammate, after the 38-year-old right-back helped Brazil win Olympic gold, extending his career championship tally to 43.

“I congratulate Dani Alves and warn him that I will strive to catch up and exceed him,” Messi said. “It’s a mindset issue; I have to find a way to compete and win.”

‘It’s impossible to imagine the club without you.’

Fans gathered outside the Nou Camp for Lionel Messi's news conference on 8 August 2021Hundreds of supporters packed the Nou Camp, while Messi’s family sat in the first row of the press conference, with Antonella, Messi’s wife, giving him a tissue.

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the Nou Camp, along with some members of Barcelona’s first squad.

As he went onto the platform, Messi was in tears, and he was greeted with ovation before, during, and after his press conference.

“We had beautiful moments and always remained together,” said Andres Iniesta, who won the Champions League four times with Messi. “Imagining the club without you or being able to see you at the Camp Nou with another jersey is tough.”

“I can only thank you for all you have given us over these years,” said Xavi Hernandez, another part of the famous Barcelona midfield. “Whatever you do, I wish you the best.”

Current Barca captain Gerard Pique said: “Nothing will ever be the same again. Not the Camp Nou, not the city of Barcelona, not ourselves. The reality, sometimes, is very harsh.”
