United’s scouts have been keeping an eye on the Uruguayan for some time, but have stepped up their efforts this season in preparation for a possible switch in the summer.
Valverde, 22, has impressed with Zinedine Zidane this season and it is his versatility that has put United at the top of their list of potential targets.
United face another possible departure of Pogba this summer. His business manager Mino Raiola suggests that the Frenchman could try to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season. Juventus are favourites to fire the World Cup winner if they decide to turn their backs on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has also been linked with Real Madrid.
Valverde could replace some of Pogba’s qualities, particularly his box-to-box performance, but he has four years left on his contract and Madrid will ask for more than €150 million to sign him.

Barca, battle of the blues for Ruiz-Atil
Chelsea have set their sights on young Paris Saint-Germain Case Ruiz-Atil, but AS are reporting that Barcelona are also interested.
The 18-year-old midfielder’s contract expires at the end of June and he is now free to talk to other clubs about a possible switch this summer.
Ruiz-Atil does not appear to have been called for action in Paris. He has not played under Mauricio Pochettino since the Argentine’s arrival in January, but former coach Thomas Tuchel has given him some game time. Chelsea are hoping Tuchel can now help convince the West London midfielder to come to the Premier League.
Ruiz-Atil left Barca’s youth system in 2015 though, so a return to his former club could be interesting. Ultimately, it depends on whether the player returns to Catalonia or opts to reunite with Tuchel, who has already given him time to play at the highest level.
Carmo is the perfect replacement for Ramos in Madrid
Real Madrid are looking for a suitable replacement for Sergio Ramos, and Braga defender David Carmo is on the agenda, according to AS.
Los Blancos are planning a possible Ramos departure for a free transfer this summer. The 34-year-old is still in talks for a new contract and Carmo is a candidate for a move.
The 21-year-old defender is being closely linked with a move to Liverpool in January. AS believes that if Braga wanted a modest €4m loan, they did not want to take the mandatory €25m option to sign him in the summer. However, The Reds were only willing to pay €20 million.
This means Carmo is always available and Madrid have a rich history of buying players from the Portuguese Primeira Liga, including Eder Militão, Pepe and Fabio Coentrao.
Carmo is under contract until 2025 and would have a €40 million exit clause. Roma and Manchester United are also interested.
