The Golden State Warriors’ Kevin Durant is a free agent this summer, and he’s been linked as a possible target of the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, if he were to join, he could potentially cause a major disruption to the league’s current balance—and that has Warriors’ fans nervous.

Some call NBA rookie of the year candidate Ben Simmons the most gifted player since LeBron James came into the league. But some think the Philadelphia 76ers should trade up and draft Simmons with the No. 1 pick, rather than selecting Duke phenom Zion Williamson. And with that, you’ve got the backdrop for what some have been calling an NBA conspiracy.

The Golden State Warriors have been in need of a true point guard for several years now. Stephen Curry will be healthy again before too long, but his minutes will inevitably decrease as the season goes on. The Warriors can start thinking about a future without Steph once he’s no longer on the court, but a point guard would be a nice stopgap. The Warriors should go after Markelle Fultz.. Simmons-Draymond

According to one NBA expert, it may not be too late for the Golden State Warriors to sign Ben Simmons.

Following the Warriors’ rejection of a high-priced pre-NBA draft deal from Philadelphia — Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, and four first-round picks, according to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer — Stephen A. Smith thinks the Warriors may still get the top player.

Simmons should still be pursued by the Warriors.

Appearing on 95.7 The Game’s “Steiny, Guru & Dibbs,” Smith said there are mixed feelings within the Warriors organization about whether to go after Simmons. Smith said he understood any hesitation on Golden State’s part, noting that they already possess a defensive-minded big man with shooting problems in Draymond Green, and would be adding another in Simmons. But Smith said the benefits would far outweigh the risks, especially if the Sixers star could become a more reliable scorer.

“I would also add this about Simmons — think about it this way: at 6’10” with his magnificent ball-handling skills, athleticism, ability to push the ball up the floor, finish at the basket, kick the ball out to open shooters, and being an elite defender — he got my vote for Defensive Player of the Year — that’s how big-time he is,” Smith said.

Last season, Simmons averaged 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game, but he was chastised for his performance in Philadelphia’s seven-game defeat to the Hawks in the conference semifinals, in which he scored 9.9 points on 15-for-45 free-throw shooting.

Smith said the Warriors’ price would have to be right — presumably giving up Andrew Wiggins and a couple first-round choices while keeping 20-year-old center James Wiseman — but that if he were in charge, he would make the deal.

The Warriors should sign a ‘Special Player.’

Smith isn’t the only NBA expert who thinks the Warriors should keep looking for Simmons. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole supported the notion as well, saying that the team’s excellent performance last season when Green shared the court with fellow big man Kevon Looney dispelled any concerns about having Green and Simmons on the floor at the same time.

Simmons may need some time to recover from a rocky finish to his time in Philadelphia, but Poole believes he is worth chasing and is definitely achievable for the Warriors if they are determined enough to make a trade.

“Simmons, whose salary is roughly comparable to Wiggins’, is unquestionably available. In America’s most forgiving sports town, he committed an unforgivable offense. Simmons’ next team will have to undergo extensive psychological rehabilitation, but he is a special player,” Poole wrote.

Poole added that the club would have to move on from its earlier asking price, which he described as a “flight of fancy,” but that as training camp approaches and the reality sets in that his time in Philadelphia is almost likely gone, the team may be more ready to negotiate a trade.
