If you’re a hockey fan, you probably recognize the Montreal Canadiens and the Winnipeg Jets as one of the top rivalries in sports. Both teams have an incredible history. It’s hard to believe, but the early games between the two teams were actually playoff games. Things have changed since then, though, as the rivalries between the two have cooled off ever since their expansion in the 1990s.

Game 1 of the first round of the NHL playoffs ended with a bang on Saturday night. Montreal Canadiens forward Alexander Radulov scored a goal and an assist to lead the Canadiens to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

Friday night games

word-image-2469 word-image-2470 Game 2: Montreal Canadiens v. Winnipeg Jets|7:30 p.m. ET (Canadians lead 1-0) The first game ended on an unpleasant note: Scheifele blamed Evans after a goal into the empty net. Evans was carried off the ice on a stretcher and suffered a concussion, and Scheifele will be suspended for four games. The Jets had to do without center Paul Stastny in the first game, and one of their most reliable defensemen, Dylan DeMelo, was out after one shift. The absence of all three would be a great loss. The Winnipeg mentality as described by Andrew Kopp: We don’t care about the goals or what the media says. We’re worried about winning the second game. It’s a big game for us. Despite being underdogs in all eight playoff games, the Canadiens keep winning. After averaging two goals per game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Habs scored five against Winnipeg, which is especially encouraging considering there were five different scorers in that game. 2 Connected word-image-2471 word-image-2472 Game 3: Colorado Lavin vs. Vegas Golden Knights | 10:00 PM ET (Avs lead 2-0) The Golden Knights are returning to their roots: They were strangers again. Vegas has scored just three goals on 66 shots by Phillip Grubauer in this series, and none of those goals have come from the first line of Mark Stone, Chandler Stephenson and Max Pacioretty. What about the Colorado top line? Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen scored six goals each. They are also one of the main reasons the powerplay fails, 4-for-11 in this series. But it’s not just about them. When asked why the stars seem to shine so brightly for the Avs, Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said: Maybe because there are seven of them? Colorado is now 6-0 in the playoffs. The only teams in the last 30 years to take a long run in the postseason: The New York Rangers in 1994 (seven) and the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008 (seven). Both teams reached the Stanley Cup Final, with the Rangers winning it in 1994.

About last night

word-image-2473 word-image-2474 Boston Bruins 2, New York Islanders 1 (OT) (Bruins lead 2-1). Craig Smith returned to the lineup and scored immediately. The Bruins’ second line, consisting of Smith, David Krejci and Taylor Hall, has developed incredible chemistry in such a short time. This trio has an impressive 73.67% success rate in 5-on-5 play, according to Natural Stat Trick. They shot 10-0 on their opponents while standing together in equal numbers on the ice. The Isles seemed unable to do anything against Tuukka Rask until Matthew Barzal scored less than six minutes into the third period to tie the game. It was Barzal’s first goal of the postseason; not the prettiest, but a goal that sent the Nassau Coliseum crowd into ecstasy. In the end, Brad Marchand was the hero in the extension, with a goal that Semyon Varlamov would certainly like to have back. The Canes used Petr Mrazek for the first time this postseason after rookie Alex Nedeljkovic missed two goals on 15 shots in Game 2. Mrazek performed well in his first game in nearly a month. He stopped all 24 shots he faced in a 5-on-5 game in regular play time. He ended up making 35 saves on 37 shots. In the second period, the Canes scored twice in a span of two minutes and 25 seconds to take a 2-0 lead. But the Lightning were very good on the power play, and Tampa Bay scored two power play goals to send the game to overtime. Jordan Staal scored the winning goal in the extension after a goal that was originally credited to Sebastian Aho. Full overview

word-image-2477 Sebastian Aho, C, Carolina Hurricanes The winner in the extension came first from center Kaines, then from Jordan Staal. But Aho was simply amazing on Thursday.
