No one will be able to play Marvel star Chris Evans’ Captain Americal for long, not even Wyatt Russell, who will wear the shield as John Walker Cap in the original Falcon series and in Marvel Studios’ Winter Soldier. Six months after Steve Rogers’ (Evans) departure in The Avengers, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) hands over Star Shield: At the end of the game, the Department of Defense announces that the United States of America has a new hero who could become a symbol for us all: John Walker (Russell), the next Captain America.

He’s really done an incredible job, Russell told USA Today of his predecessor, who first appeared in Captain America in 2011: First Avenger. It was a very different version of Captain America, with far fewer problems. He fought the Nazis and had fewer internal problems because everyone thought he was perfect. It’s so hard to play, and he did such a good job of bringing the conflict into the character.

Like the viewers who responded with #NotMyCap after Russell’s debut as Captain America in the first series of New World Order, Falcon and Winter Soldier will talk about what it means for someone who isn’t Steve Rogers to become a character in a world that continues to gain power after Blip.

It’s perfect. Who else could play Captain America as well as Chris Evans? None, Russell said. And the beauty of this series is that it puts it where it says: Well, who else is gonna play Captain America? This guy?

Walker is a soldier at odds with his moral compass, which, as comic book readers know, doesn’t really suit the good-hearted Steve Rogers.

I don’t think many [Marvel Cinematic Universe] characters have had the same dilemma as him, trying to fit into a superhero world with similar morals, Russell said of the Marvel Comics version of American Agent in the MCU. He’s been thrust into the role of Captain America, and he’s going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his path is very specific, learned mainly by being a trained human hunter. I mean, that’s what the marines are. They’re not Steve Rogers, they’re not the same. They don’t look like Boy Scouts anymore. They’re a little rougher.

Russell added that there’s always an element of reality [in the series] where you’re like, sometimes you need this guy, and he’s not always handsome. It’s fun to play these characters because they are always in conflict with themselves. They are always in conflict with their own abilities and their own moral compass. They know what’s right, more or less, but they also want to win, and they struggle with that.
