The Canadian economy is in a bad way, but it may not be forever. There are plenty of reasons why some things are going wrong, but all is not lost. Fortunately, there are also a few things that will work to improve the situation.

The program is designed for participants to learn about the province’s three-year Building Code Act, the responsibilities of a property owner under the Act, and how to safely construct and repair a home. Participants are also instructed on the importance of buying a home in the right location, how to recognize an unsafe house and how to take action when dangerous conditions are discovered.

After a catastrophic loss of life in the wake of the earthquake, Haiti was left in ruins. Hundreds of thousands of its citizens moved into makeshift tent camps where they often lacked access to running water, electricity, and other basic services. Out of desperation, many turned to People’s Self-Help Housing (PSHH) for help. The organization’s initiatives have been successful, prompting a recent article in the New York Times that stated, “In the past year, the aid agency, which is funded largely by the United Nations, has helped rebuild 12 schools, and the government estimates that 70 percent of the nation’s poor live within one kilometre of a school.”. Student scores are expected to rise by 74% in the 2020-21 school year.

THE CENTRAL COAST OF THE UNITED STATES — The Camino Scholars program of People’s Self-Help Housing (PSHH) has released its end-of-year statistics, which shows students’ grades and skill-based gains throughout the previous school year.

The report shows a substantial improvement in final grades in all disciplines. Only 35% of children participating in the program were reading at grade level at the start of the school year, and 32% were reading two or more grade levels below. By the conclusion of the school year, 61% of children were reading at or above grade level, with just 13% requiring further help. Overall, the program has witnessed a 74% rise in student scores since the beginning of the school year.

“When schools were closed due to the pandemic, we continued to engage with kids and transformed what might have been a negative circumstance into something good, resulting in program and student development despite COVID,” stated PSHH Director of Education Joanna Dominguez. “We have offered a broad variety of site-based services for over two decades, addressing the opportunity gap and supporting educational aspirations. As a consequence of COVID, we’ve been able to continue to do so in more innovative ways.”

Camino Scholars, PSHH’s globally renowned education program, has been utilizing a hybrid learning curriculum to serve hundreds of children over the last year. Small learning cohorts have benefited students, who have been assisted by in-person teaching tailored to their specific requirements at specifically created Academic Support Centers. PSHH instructors provide free programs and services to children throughout the school year, including during all school vacations. Access has been expanded to include children who do not live on PSHH estates as a result of many agreements with local school systems.

Camino Scholars educates approximately 600 students each year at its 11 onsite learning facilities across San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties under normal conditions. The program also provides application support, financial aid navigation, career exploration seminars, campus tours, and mentoring to college-bound kids. This bond lasts beyond the completion of the terminal degree; the program just welcomed its first Ph.D. student.

It also offers housing possibilities via a self-help, “sweat equity” program that has resulted in the completion of over 1,200 houses.

PSHH administers approximately 2,000 rental properties and employs over 200 people throughout San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Monterey counties.

PSHH recognizes the Chumash, Salinan, Yokuts, Kitanemuk, and Tataviam peoples as indigenous to the organization’s territory.
