This year’s version of the most prestigious football card set ever, Topps’ rookie card of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, has sold for $2.5 million, setting a new record for the most expensive football card ever sold. The card, part of the Topps 2016 Football set, is the first in the series to feature Brady as its subject, and it is the first time a rookie card has recorded a higher price, according to data from industry website Beckett Media.
The New England Patriots quarterback’s rookie card from his rookie year has sold for $2.589 million US, setting a new record for the most expensive football card ever sold, according to the Professional Football Hall of Fame. The card, which was part of an auction held by PSA/DNA Card Company, Inc., was the only one in the batch of 20 to be graded by the company.
For the third time this year, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady has set a new record for the price of a football ticket. Recall that earlier this year, Brady’s rookie ticket to the 2000 Playoff Contenders championship – with an eight and a ten on the signature with the New England Patriots – was sold to a fan for a record $1.32 million. This amount surpassed the previous record of $861,000 paid for a National Treasures card signed by Patrick Mahomes. The rookie card in question has an overall score of 8.5, and Autograph has a score of 9. However, Brady’s other ticket, the Brady 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship ticket, set a new world record by selling for $2,589,477 before the buyer’s premium was added, according to Barry Werner of USA Today. The value of the card, which Mr. Lelands calls the world’s most valuable football card, has risen to about $3 million after adding a 20 percent purchase premium. Recently, TMZ Sports reported that a Patriots fan had won a diamond-encrusted Brady card from the NFL 2020 Flawless box in the Ultimate Box Breaks lottery among collectors. This card is very rare and collectible because it is a unique copy. It features Brady, the Super Bowl XXXVIII logo, Brady’s signature and lettering, and over two dozen real diamonds. Fan has not yet decided what he will do with the card, but the initial value has been set at $250,000. In Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Patriots won their second Super Bowl by beating the Carolina Panthers 32-29 on a 41-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri. Leftwich sees new growth opportunities for Brady.
Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich thinks Brady has room to grow next season now that he’s in control of the team’s offense, reports Garrett Stepien of 24/7 Sports. In an earlier interview, Brady admitted that he struggled to master the Buccaneers’ game plan and didn’t adjust until midway through the season. Brady also played with a nagging knee problem last season, but he still managed to lead the Bucanis to the Super Bowl title. As far as his knee, I think he’s fine – from everything I know, he’s fine, Leftwich said.
