The Ronaldo-Juventus situation has been a tense one: after four years at the Juventus, Ronaldo returned to United and signed a new £300,000-a-week, four-year deal in the summer of 2018.

It’s been five years since Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu in a world record £80m move after nine seasons with the Red Devils. After everything he’d achieved, it was hard to believe that Ronaldo would leave but that’s exactly what happened. The Madrid outfit also offered him bonuses of £30m each year, which he couldn’t turn down.

This has been a fantastic transfer window. Nobody expected anything to happen given the difficulties of the previous 18 months, which included the COVID-19 epidemic and the ensuing financial crisis.

According to Transfermarkt, the English Premier League led the way this summer, spending €1.35 billion (almost as much as Barcelona’s debt), with 248 arrivals, and some of the mega-deals that occurred this window astounded us.

Just in the Premier League, we saw Romelu Lukaku join Chelsea for €115 million, Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane join Man United for €141 million, Man City sign Grealish, Jack for €120 million, and Arsenal spend the most of any English team (€165 million) on six players.

In Europe, Italian Serie A clubs spent €549 million, German Bundesliga clubs spent €416 million, French Ligue 1 clubs spent €384 million, and Spanish LaLiga clubs spent €229 million, which would have risen by approximately €200 million if PSG had accepted Real Madrid’s late bid for Kylian Mbappe.

There were also several high-profile free transfers elsewhere in Europe, with Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Georginio Wijnaldum joining PSG; Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay, and Eric Garcia joining Barcelona; David Alaba joining Real Madrid; and Hakan Calhanoglu joining Inter.

It’s not every day that superstars like Ronaldo and Messi switch clubs in the same transfer window, so fans have been in for a great treat since July 1. The clubs and players that won and lost the window are listed below.

Paris Saint-Germain

The Parisian giants, who are sponsored by Qatar’s royal family, have had one of the most successful transfer windows in recent memory. The free transfer of six-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi from Barcelona is certainly the cherry on top, but they have also made other outstanding acquisitions, including probably the finest young goalkeeper in the world, Donnarumma, and maybe the best right-back in the world, Achraf Hakimi. With the additions of Wijnaldum, Ramos, and teenage left-back Nuno Mendes, PSG has built half of a world-class team in the span of a few summer months for a total of €72 million. The pressure is now on not just to win Ligue 1 again, but also to win the Champions League for the first time.

Oh, and they managed to retain star striker Kylian Mbappe by turning down a €200 million offer from Real Madrid little over a year before he becomes a free agent. Time will tell whether it was a wise decision, but at the very least, they will enjoy the benefits this season.

Manchester United is a football club based in England

Even before Cristiano Ronaldo arrived, it would have been a more than acceptable transfer window at Old Trafford with a joyful conclusion to the year-long Sancho issue and the acquisition of a world-class centre-back in Raphael Varane from Real Madrid. The 36-year-return old’s to the club, though, adds to United’s pressure. The days of playing down expectations are long gone, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has a new task in managing his former comrade and potentially having to squeeze people into his starting XI for the first time. The departure of winger Daniel James to Leeds was also profitable for the club.

Chelsea

The club went into the market with the goal of bolstering a Champions League-winning, high-potential team. While the chase of Jules Kounde, a great defender who would improve almost any club in Europe, halted owing to Sevilla’s determination to hold out for €80 million, Thomas Tuchel has already molded Chelsea’s defense into a compact, well-functioning unit. The loan acquisition of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, a superb utility player capable of filling a variety of midfield positions, came as a late bonus, and the club did well to move on Tammy Abraham (€40 million), Kurt Zouma (€30 million), and a slew of other players to make a €2 million profit.

Leicester City is a football club based in Leicester

Despite the fact that none of the summer acquisitions have made headlines yet, Leicester has kept to its guns by concentrating on the sector they know best: up-and-coming European league players with great potential. Few teams are better at spotting value than Brendan Rodgers’ scouting staff, and the arrivals of Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare and FC Salzburg forward Patson Daka follow a trend set by past transfer windows. When Wesley Fofana was injured in preseason, Leicester moved quickly to acquire Denmark international Jannik Vestergaard, a solid defender with Premier League experience following a stint at Southampton.

Jack Grealish

Grealish, unlike Harry Kane is an English footballer who plays for Tottenham Hot, was ultimately able to sign for Manchester City. Possibly more of a luxury acquisition for a team that already has a plethora of great forward choices than a necessary addition for a squad that already has a plethora of quality forward options. Rather than causing a disturbance, Aston Villa quickly spent the €120 million windfall on a proven Premier League striker (Danny Ings), wide-area inventiveness (Emiliano Buendia), and Bayern Leverkusen attacker Leon Bailey. As a result, it was a win-win situation for both the player and his previous team.

Julien Laurens wonders why Barcelona seems to be planning to strengthen a direct competitor in exchange for Antoine Griezmann.

Losers

Barcelona

Huge debts of €1.35 billion, internal unrest, and the Spanish league’s strict adherence to financial regulations all led to the unthinkable: Messi, perhaps the greatest player of all time, left Barcelona after 21 years to join Paris Saint-Germain. Also, it’s a free move. The humiliation over the late registration of their upcoming acquisitions — Aguero, Memphis, and Eric Garcia — is just more proof of the present turmoil enveloping one of the world’s most famous teams. As a consequence, they allowed Emerson Royal go for €25 million despite just signing him this summer, and they sent Antoine Griezmann back on loan to championship rivals Atletico Madrid to get him off the payroll after failing to sell Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic.

The fact that veteran players Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba decided to accept salary cuts to assist the club’s finances was a saving grace, but Barcelona experienced one of the worst transfer windows in history, and there are no indications that things will change anytime soon.

Harry Kane

After his attempts to join Manchester City were thwarted by chairman Daniel Levy – or maybe the champions’ reluctance to pay the £150 million needed to acquire him – the England captain was forced to remain at Spurs. The silver lining for Kane is that he is back on a Spurs team that has a perfect record and is now in first place in the Premier League after three games. And, like with previous players who have flirted with rival teams, scoring a few goals — especially in the next North London derby — is a guaranteed way to heal fences. Spurs can look back on a successful transfer window. In addition to retaining Kane, they have strengthened their defense with the additions of Emerson Royal and Cristian Romero, as well as the signing of Son Heung-Min to a new deal.

Inter Milan is a club based in Milan,

Inter, although not as severely affected as Barcelona, has been plagued by financial problems, and it seemed inevitable that the Serie A winners would confront difficulties this summer. The most significant loss was probably head coach Antonio Conte’s resignation at the conclusion of their successful season, despite the fact that the team has begun the current season with six points from two games. Hakimi, a key right winger, quickly followed the head coach out the door to PSG for €70 million, while Lukaku, the club’s best scorer last season, joined Chelsea for €115 million. Inter kept Lautaro Martinez and added Denzel Dumfries, Joaquin Correa, Edin Dzeko, and Hakan Calhanoglu, but their team is unquestionably weaker.

Willian’s decision to end his Arsenal contract has pleased Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens.

Arsenal

Manager Mikel Arteta may have brought in a lot of talent, such as Brighton’s Ben White and Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, but paying €28 million for backup goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was exorbitant. The same can be argued about the €40 million paid for Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard, which is more than the €30 million Madrid paid for Eduardo Camavinga, who is much better. Arsenal’s rejuvenation and restructuring plan is admirable, but they only received a price for one player, Joe Willock, and were fortunate that Willian, 33, cancelled his £100,000-a-week three-year deal to join Corinthians. Regardless of how good the talent they bring in is, there are always concerns about how they will grow in an unsettling atmosphere. It’s been a tough start with three losses in three Premier League games and no goals scored.

Rafa Benitez is a Spanish footballer who plays for Real Madrid.

Despite being fully aware of the budgetary limitations before to taking the manager’s position at Everton, Benitez’s transfer period must have left a sour taste in his mouth. While his predecessors benefited from large transfer budgets, Benitez has the task of revitalizing a team on which he had little influence. He couldn’t even enjoy Moise Kean’s potentially thrilling homecoming, as the Italian striker’s two-year loan back to Juventus was finalized on Deadline Day. The additions of wingers Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend, as well as striker Salomon Rondon, 31 years old, indicate that the team is in danger.
