Racing Louisville picked University of North Carolina defender Emily Fox with the first pick in Wednesday’s NWSL draft, while the Washington Spirit picked Trinity Rodman with the second pick.
The U20 Rodman forward is the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman.

Fox, 22, is one of the few players who has experience with the entire U.S. national team. Fox, who can also play in the midfield, has three caps and has also played for the U.S. Under-20 team.
I’m very excited, Fox said at U.S. training camp in Orlando, Florida. I know [Christy Holley, Louisville manager] from when he was a college assistant.
So when I talked to him, he told me about the culture, everything they have in store, the facilities, the girls on the team, I’m so happy to be there and be part of the team.
Rodman, 18, was a finalist for the title of Young American Footballer of the Year. He was the top player for the U.S. national U-20 team at the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship last March, scoring eight goals and six assists. Rodman enrolled at Washington State University, but was never able to adjust to the Cougars after the university’s 2020 season was pushed back to this spring.
Just being in the draft with my situation and my age is crazy, but if the number two pick is for a great team out of this world, I can’t ask for anything else, Rodman said. Washington just has a great program, a great team. Coach [Richie Burke] is great. I spoke to him several times. I know he is a tough head coach, but I am really looking forward to being his player, learning and improving.
As for the influence of her famous father, Rodman said she is ready to be known as an outstanding player herself.
He was a great athlete, and I inherited his genes, but I’m happy to be known as Trinity Rodman, not just Rodman’s daughter, she said. I look forward to making my own way and becoming a better person on this journey.
Originally, Sky Blue had the next two screenings, but after midfielder/forward Brianna Pinto became No. 3 at UNC, the team decided to trade the No. 4 pick in Kansas City for $175,000 in spending money. Kansas City then used the spike to select Stanford defender Kiki Pickett. Kansas City may have to wait a little longer to see Pickett up close, as she said she will stay in school to play in the spring.
With his second pick in the first round, No. 5, Racing Louisville University of Louisville selected midfielder Emina Ekich.
The Portland Thorns have moved on to trade No. 7, No. 32 and the 2021 international slot with the Chicago Red Stars in exchange for the overall No. 1 seed. 6. The Thorns have selected midfielder Yazmin Ryan from Texas Christian University.
