An earthquake that struck the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia early Friday morning left a trail of death and destruction. According to initial estimates, 34 people have been killed and hundreds injured. This is a natural disaster, and while there are tools like a seismograph to predict an earthquake, no one can determine the exact location of the impact. When this earthquake occurred in the early morning, people were clearly overwhelmed. It was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake. The epicenter was 3.7 miles northeast of the town of Magene, at a depth of about 6.2 miles. The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics confirmed this.

Initial estimates indicate that eight people have been killed, more than 600 injured and hundreds left homeless in Majene. In neighbouring Mamuju district, 26 people have died. These are official data from the National Disaster Management Board of the BNPB.

According to CNN, the quakes lasted five to seven seconds and damaged many homes in Madgene. People have fled the city to seek refuge. Mamujuyeh’s buildings were reduced to rubble and Majen’s military command was also damaged. Local search and rescue teams are trying to free people trapped in the collapsed buildings. An official told part of the media: Our priority is to rescue the victims still buried under the buildings. Many buildings in Mamuju have become piles of rubble and people have had to leave their homes.

They didn’t have the courage to stay home.

Earthquake caused significant damage

Health care is a mess after an earthquake. He damaged four hospitals. One of them is the largest hospital in Mamuju. The Communications Director mentioned the need for additional moving equipment. He also needs extra hands to rescue the victims trapped under the building.

Authorities have evacuated people from some of the homes destroyed by the earthquake. CNN is talking about infrastructure damage, which is common in this industry. The damaged roads caused communication breakdowns and affected the local telephone network. Renewable energies can play an important role in such situations. In November 2019, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake killed at least 27 people in Turkey and Greece.

People fleeing an earthquake

A sudden earthquake sent people astray. This happened while they were sleeping and they didn’t expect it. They had to quickly leave their homes and leave their belongings behind. This situation is difficult to reconcile. CNN adds that many people who have fled do not want to return for fear of another earthquake or tsunami. According to West Sulawesi’s top police commissioner, Syamsu Ridwan – Some of them are going up to avoid the tsunami, although we have confirmation that there is no tsunami after this big earthquake. In 2018, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Sulawesi, killing thousands of people. In December 2018, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Alaska and damaged infrastructure.

Hospital destroyed by earthquake

According to Al Jazeera, the earthquake leveled a hospital north of Majene, trapping patients and staff under the rubble. Efforts are being made to save them. An official of the Mamuju Disaster Management Authority said this number may increase but we hope it will not…. Many dead are buried under the rubble. Electricity was also disrupted and travel was interrupted by damage to roads and bridges. Indonesia is in the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is an archipelago with strong tectonic activity and frequent earthquakes. In December 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake on the northern island of Sumatra, Indonesia, triggered a tsunami that flooded several countries in the region and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
