The U.S. Football League (USFL) may have been a short-lived attempt to bring professional football back to the nation’s capital, but one of its most prominent players is trying to bring a successful modern version back to the US.
The United States Football League (USFL) was a National Football League (NFL) expansion team that played from 1983 to 1985. The league’s clubs were located in cities where the NFL had never had teams, including Tampa, Birmingham, Phoenix, Jacksonville and Memphis. The USFL also spawned a new professional football league, the World League of American Football (WLAF), in 1987.

New USFL needs players like Cam Newton
Someone like former NFL player Cam Newton could help the USFL survive when it returns in 2022. The American Football League is expected to return in the spring of 2022, likely without Donald Trump. Fox owns the television rights and the game will begin during the NFL offseason. If the USFL wants to draft teams, they need players. And to keep the league interesting, it needs name players. That’s where Cam Newton, a 2011 first-team player in his second year with the New England Patriots, comes in. At this point we note that there is no communication linking Newton to the USFL. Leagues like the AAF and the reborn XFL failed largely because they lacked star power. If the coronavirus pandemic hadn’t prematurely ended the 2020 XFL season, one wonders if teams made up of untransferred players and former NFL players with years of experience would return in 2021. The USFL should focus on players like Newton, who have made a lot of money in the NFL and can use spring league as an opportunity to prove they can still play football. The former NFL MVP has struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness in recent years, and the Patriots used a first-round pick on Mack Jones in the 2021 NFL Draft. The USFL doesn’t look too bad! !! Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette, who was picked first by the Sacramento Kings in 2011, spent several years in China. He’s playing well enough there that the Phoenix Suns contracted him in March 2019, and he’s played six games for the team. This version of the USFL won’t compete with NFL prospects like Spencer Rattler, so why not go to the other end of the spectrum and add older but still active players?
These minor leaguers can’t keep counting on Johnny Manziel and friends
If and when the USFL launches, it’s likely that the rosters will largely consist of players with little to no NFL experience. Maybe Johnny Manziel will show up at some point, fresh out of the fan-controlled football league, to boost ratings and say that he thinks he’ll never play in the NFL again. Sure, there’s a benefit to building your team over the players who aren’t playing, but that won’t make people watch. Opening weekend interest aside, fans in Los Angeles or Houston probably won’t want to see the former Central Michigan quarterback or James Madison University All-American receiver. I have nothing against these players, but these leagues need proven names with some degree of timeliness. Newton or Todd Gurley can do what former New Orleans Saints quarterback Tommy Stephens or former Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back T.J. Logan can do.
What other players should the USFL try to contract?
If the USFL listens and doesn’t just fill its ranks with untrained players or young, inexperienced NFL players, it has a better chance of getting attention. Take someone like Golden Tate, who recently played for the New York Giants. Tate stays until the 8th. June 2021 is a free agent and turns 33 in August. If he’s not on an NFL team next season, why wouldn’t he try to do something in the USFL? There will always be older players, whether they are 20 or 30, who want to keep playing. Julian Edelman could try to play for a Tampa Bay team to prove he’s healthy, and Gurley could do the same for a Chicago team. Baseball players do it in independent leagues and basketball players do it abroad. Accepting the idea of bringing in older players like Newton – or even Richard Sherman – will not diminish the hopes and dreams of the USFL becoming a viable spring football league.
