INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA – A powerful rhythm was blared by a trumpet, and a string group joined in.
The Mariachi Rams sang, “I got five on it!” as the SoFi Stadium audience erupted in applause.
Jalen Ramsey’s smile spread over his face as he turned to the infinity screen, saw the Mariachi Rams wearing his No. 5 jersey, and heard their track, which was one of his favorite hip-hop songs adapted with a mariachi twist.
“The vibe was incredible, and all I wanted to say was, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ ‘Turn it up!’” Ramsey remembered something. “What they accomplished was really unique and personal.”
Ramsey nodded and raised his hands in gratitude as the Mariachi Rams’ 60-second performance of Luniz’s 1995 song concluded, then returned to the Week 9 game against the Tennessee Titans.
“We wanted him to know we were doing it for him,” Jesse Hernandez, one of the band’s nine members, said. “Jalen is the real deal. He’s a friend of ours.”

Since they began performing at Rams games in 2019, the Mariachi Rams have developed a cult following.
Santiago Alberto, a band member who organizes the group’s music, described it as “electrifying.” “As if the adrenaline is pumping. It seems like we’re performing in front of 70,000 people.”
When the band plays from a stage in the northwest corner of the stadium bowl during pauses in the football action, Rams fans often ask for pictures and give them their complete attention.
The All-Pro Ramsey, a 27-year-old Nashville native whose attention the Mariachi Rams attracted when he played their first game in Los Angeles two seasons ago following his blockbuster trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars, whom the Rams visit Sunday, is possibly the team’s most renowned fan (4:05 p.m. ET, Fox).
“It was a star-studded event like I’d never seen before in my NFL career,” Ramsey said on his first game in Los Angeles in 2019. “Then there was a mariachi band, which was something completely different, and I knew it was something exclusive to the L.A. Rams since we didn’t have anything like that in Jacksonville.”
The Mariachi Rams offer real songs as well as mariachi-infused hip-hop and popular culture music on occasion. They’ve performed “California Love” by 2Pac, “Rockytheme “‘s tune, and even ESPN’s Monday Night Football theme. They’re the first mariachi band in the NFL.
Alberto, a 27-year-old music instructor, said, “It’s just so great to see all these various cultures all together, connected through sports and music.” “I simply think we’re fortunate to have this chance.”
“They kind of exemplify what L.A. is about,” Ramsey said. “Being in L.A. and being in the culture here and being around so many different individuals in the community, they kind of embody what L.A. is about.”
Ramsey drove up to SoFi Stadium in a blue and yellow Porsche and walked out in a matching charro, a traditional mariachi costume, with special white boots, proudly exhibiting his respect for the band before a Week 3 battle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In expressing his tribute, Ramsey remarked, “It was simply pure delight.” “They hand-stitched everything to perfection, took my measurements, and the suit fits like a glove. It was very unique. This is a unique opportunity.”
It was something Ramsey decided he wanted to accomplish after seeing the Mariachi Rams bring life to the stadium with a preseason performance, offering a much-needed change of pace after NFL teams were obliged to play primarily in quiet in 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
“We were like, ‘Damn, he looks better than we do, guy!’” Hernandez, 70, a music instructor, recalled with a giggle. “And he’s a huge man with a lot of muscle. However, it was a fantastic match for him.”
Alberto stated, “He wore it with a lot of pride.” “He wore it with respect and dignity.”

Ramsey has not been able to meet COVID-19 in person due to the NFL’s safety rules, but he was able to FaceTime with the band the day he wore their outfit.
“They were ecstatic, and I was ecstatic to meet them as well,” Ramsey added. “It was great to be able to go inside SoFi Stadium and represent them.”
Alberto stated: “How great is it to have an NFL player interested in meeting you or learning more about what you’re doing? In most cases, the situation is reversed.”
Regarding Ramsey’s fandom, Hernandez stated, “It’s a fantastic thing because you wouldn’t anticipate it.”
Ramsey said it would be nice if the band learned how to perform “I Got 5 on It” in a video for the Los Angeles Rams’ website.
Despite the difficulties of taking an original tune with drums, keyboards, and synths and making it genuinely mariachi with trumpets, violins, a guitarron, vihuela, and guitar with just one formal rehearsal, they heard Ramsey’s request and started to work.
“I wrote the group’s arrangements and said, “You know what, we’re going to do this and we’re going to do it correctly.” We’re not going to make it corny or anything like that. We’re going to go all out, “Alberto said. “It was a test, but I was ready for it.”
Ramsey responded, “That was dope.” “I wasn’t prepared for it.”
What does Ramsey’s next request entail?
“I’m hoping that immediately after the Super Bowl, God willing, the Rams play in and win the Super Bowl, and I can meet them right after the Super Bowl,” Ramsey added. “And we can spend the summer learning to play an instrument together.”
