Officially, Castle and Firefly actor Nathan Fillion will play TDK, a character originally created for the DC Films universe, in James Gunn’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie. But since the character’s official name, rumors have been circulating that Fillion is actually playing a third-rate version of the superhero Arm-FallOff Boy, a secondary character who applied for the Legion of Super-Heroes and didn’t make it, but will have other adventures over the years, sometimes under the name Splinter, as some characters were given new names that better fit the 90s after the DC Chronicle reboot after Zero Hour.
In the comics, the character has the ability to remove limbs and use them as blunt weapons. They appear and disappear more or less like the hands in the old He-Man toys, with a bloodless process that leaves an empty cavity for the limb bone to be replaced after use.
The fabric design that co-creator Kurt Swan came up with for the liberated rosettes is very similar to the TDK costume emblem. So rumors swirled that Fillion would play the character after the first photos leaked. Gunn decided to deny the rumors. Million said he doesn’t mind fans thinking he’s playing Arm-Fall-Off Boy, because then he won’t accidentally reveal the name of the real character he’s playing. However, he assured fans that Arm-FallOff Boy is not the name that was in the script.
But after the Suicide Squad trailer released yesterday, in which Fillion’s character appears to be standing with his arms torn free from his torso and floating in the air beside him, the rumors have been resurrected. Unless we’ve overlooked something somewhere, it’s not the power of the Arm Fall Off Boy, but just the idea of someone wearing that logo and being separated from their arms is enough to get Twitter thinking.
A plausible speculation is that the character Arm Fall Off Boy was considered banned because of the character’s co-creator, Gerard Jones. DC generally allows writers to request payment when their characters are used in other media, and in recent years DC has largely avoided making Jones’ work available. The writer, who worked on Justice League Europe and Green Lantern in the late 1980s and early 1990s, was arrested in 2016 on suspicion of possession of child pornography and has been in jail since 2018. It is possible that the desire to avoid any association with Jones led to the decision not to use the character of the Arm-Fall-Off Boy, even though the character in the film resembles him. Jones has created at least two characters that have recently been brought to the big screen: Topaz, who played a small role in Thor: Ragnarok and the Green Lantern character, Yalan Gur, who made a brief appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The appearance of a flying weapon similar to that of Mr. B. The fact that no one (ironically, Fillions Firefly opponent Alan Tudyk) is unbound raises some questions: His body might fall apart, but certainly not by manually pulling things into place and using them as blunt weapons. It’s entirely possible that he has similar gifts – and many fans have speculated that T.D.K. could be short for The Detachable Kid – but it’s highly unlikely they’ll find out he’s from the 30th century. Or something like that. This is all speculation, as is the name Removable Baby, and also just a guess that Fillion is probably playing some variation of the character. Still, this seems like a reasonable speculation given the context.
Suicide Squad will be released in theaters and on HBO Max in August 2021.
