Since Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) has officially crossed the billion dollar mark, it’s time to take a look back at key moments in the franchise’s 14-year history. From September 4, 2008, Marvel Studios took the world by storm with their first teaser trailer for Iron Man, which helped to kick off a series of announcements of their new movie slate. Marvel Studios announced their first decade-long project, The Avengers, in May 2012, and the press were a bit skeptical of the film, which was the first Marvel production to not feature a character from the original comic books: Daredevil and The Punisher. With a budget of $220 million, the film premiered in May 2012 to rave reviews, and became the highest-gross

The Avengers may have won the battle, but they’re not the only heroes in town. Marvel has been cranking out a plethora of awesome movies for the last ten years, and there’s a lot to learn. Here’s everything you need to know about the Marvel timeline.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has some of the most extensive and detailed backstories of all the films mentioned in this series, so much so that it borders on being a time-travel story that is also a biography.. Read more about marvel films in order of story and let us know what you think. For over a decade, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a manageable film franchise. The timeline was fairly linear, and everything existed in a unified universe. It wasn’t hard to think of. That could change in the next few years, when Marvel starts introducing the multiverse and playing with variations of its own timeline. These potentially wild concepts are at the heart of Disney+’s new series Loki, in which the god of mischief bounces between versions of reality as he tries to solve the problems he’s created. Although Loki died in the main episode of the MCU, the creation of alternate timelines created a possibility for the character’s return. It can seem confusing when it comes to the new series, and there are a few minor plot holes that pop up when alternate realities are introduced, but the franchise offered a pretty simple explanation in Avengers: An endgame that helps understand what’s going on. When the Avengers went back in time to get the Infinity Stones, the Hulk was sent to the Sanctum Sanctorum for the Time Stone. He had a meeting with an Elder who gave him a brief but important explanation of how the infinity stones are connected to their original realities. There is only one linear timeline, and that timeline is held by the Infinity Stones. When you move a stone from its place in time, you create an alternate timeline. Hulk promised the Ancient One that after defeating Thanos, they would return the stones to their rightful place. That’s what Steve Rogers will do at the end of Avengers: Endgame. All would be well in the world of the MCU if it weren’t for Loki. The 2012 version of the character stole the Tesseract in New York in 2012, creating a split reality. So the Avengers went back even further to confront him. Loki’s deviation from traditional reality is the basis of the series’ plot. It exists in a different timeline than we’ve seen for most of the MCU. Still, there should be an additional explanation in the show itself. If Loki had brought the Tesseract to New York in 2012, the timeline could have been restored. But that wouldn’t make for compelling television, would it? There are more holes in the timeline that Loki must help the Time Change Authority fill. This may be due to the removal of the Infinity stones over the years. On the other hand, there may be another method of changing the timeline introduced in the series. With the arrival of Loki and Doctor Strange in the Madness multiverse, the concept of reality in the MCU is about to get a lot more complicated. For now, it’s best to follow Ancient’s explanation until the franchise tells us otherwise. Loki will be available starting Wednesday the 9th. June, on Disney+.
